Horsman / Horseman One Name Study

Horsman & Horseman One Name Study

Welcome to the Horsman / Horseman One Name study web site. My interest in researching my surname began when my father stopped 'Tracing the Ancestors' and gave me his boxes of research.

Whilst I am still facing the same ancestral brick wall that Dad faced in the 1970's, in the course of looking for my elusive ancestor John Horseman, I trawled all the parish registers in the Ripon area of Yorkshire, where he lived, and collected lots of information on the Hors(e)man families. I followed these families as they moved, and discovered more Hors(e)man families living in other parts of the country.

My One Name Study was born!

This site is intended to provide information on the individuals who made up the different families. I also wish to save over 25 years of research in perpetuity.

I am a member of the Guild of One Name Studies - GOONS, which is a Society whose members study all occurrences of a surname, as opposed to simply their direct ancestors.

The following link tells you more about my researches.

Researching Hors(e)man Families

I have re-constructed family trees for many of the families which originate in the UK. Each tree has been carefully researched, and many go back to the 1700’s. I also have many twigs which are not connected to a main tree. Usually this is because I can’t find the information which will prove a connection, though I may sometimes have some grounds for suspecting that a connection exists. Some of the ‘twigs’ are not included in the following lists, so do get in touch if you can’t find the family you are looking for.

The following link shows details of families I have researched by county / country. Click on the map or place name to see details of the families. Where a family has been researched and details are on this site, a link to the person will also appear against the county name

Families by County / Country

The families which I have researched to date are summarised by 'Branch' via the link on the top bar.

I still have a lot more research to do: many families require more research and there are other family groups still to do (especially those overseas). As you can imagine this is a task which will occupy me for many years.

When searching my site, do try all variants of the spelling. If you don't find the person you are looking for as Horsman, try Horseman (and vice versa).

If you have a male Hors(e)man ancestor with a common forename, check out the Reports section, where there are reports listing certain forenames by Year of Birth, irrespective of surname spelling.

There are several instances of people who changed their surname to Hors(e)man from something else. These can be found via the following link.

Surname Changes

You will see that I have two 'Trees'; 'North' and 'South'. Unfortunately when I first started my research I kept the northern families in a separate database to those living in other parts of the UK. It is now difficult to combine the two. However, the basic search works over both trees, and the advanced search allows you to choose either.

If you have a Horsman / Horseman in your family whose details you can't find on this site, please get in touch and I will do my best to help. They may be from a family which I am still 'working on'.

For those of you who do find their family here, please get in touch; it would be great if you could share information or photographs of your Hors(e)man ancestors with me. Also, do let me know if any of my information is incorrect. Please be assured that details of living people will not appear on the site.

I also run a DNA study which mainly focuses on male ancestry (Y-DNA). The link to this is on the top bar. However, if you are doing a 'Family Finder' DNA test, and find contacts with Hors(e)man ancestry, do get in touch as I may be able to help identify the family.
